Smooth-Sil™ 950 and RTV-4150 are both Shore A50 platinum-cure silicones with a relatively firm cured profile for reusable molds. At this hardness, the cured rubber provides useful body and resistance to deformation during casting and handling, while offering less flexibility than softer silicone grades. Mold geometry and demolding requirements should therefore be considered alongside hardness when selecting an A50 material.
The mixing systems are one of the clearest differences between the two materials. Smooth-Sil™ 950 uses a 100A:10B ratio by weight and requires accurate component measurement. RTV-4150 uses a 1:1 ratio by weight or volume, which simplifies routine component proportioning. The difference in mixing system is particularly relevant for users who prepare frequent batches or prefer a straightforward 1:1 process.
The materials also have different processing windows. Smooth-Sil™ 950 has a published 45-minute pot life, while MinghuiLink lists a 30–40-minute working time for RTV-4150. The longer stated working window of Smooth-Sil™ 950 may provide more flexibility during mixing and pouring. Cure time, however, differs substantially: Smooth-On lists approximately 18 hours for Smooth-Sil™ 950, while MinghuiLink lists approximately 5–6 hours for RTV-4150 under its stated conditions. This difference can be important when faster mold turnaround is required.
Viscosity is another major processing difference. Smooth-On reports 35,000 cps for Smooth-Sil™ 950, while MinghuiLink reports approximately 7,000 mPa·s for Part A of RTV-4150. Because the manufacturers report these values at different measurement points, they should not be treated as a strict like-for-like viscosity ranking. The published values nevertheless indicate different handling and pouring characteristics, including differences in air-release behavior.
The published mechanical data are relatively close but show different balances. Smooth-Sil™ 950 reports approximately 5.00 MPa tensile strength, 27.2 N/mm tear strength and 320% elongation. RTV-4150 reports 4.6±0.5 MPa tensile strength, 28±0.5 N/mm tear strength and 350±50% elongation. RTV-4150 therefore reports slightly higher published tear strength and elongation, while Smooth-Sil™ 950 reports the higher published tensile-strength value. These figures should be treated as published reference data rather than a direct laboratory ranking because the manufacturers may use different test methods and conditions.
